How Do You Get Your Business Mentioned by ChatGPT?

Every week an Indian business owner asks us a version of the same question: why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me? The answer is rarely mysterious. It usually comes down to five inputs, and most businesses fail on the first.

Can AI crawlers actually read your site?

Start here, because nothing else matters if the answer is no. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are separate user agents from Googlebot, and a robots.txt written in 2019 does not mention them. Plenty of sites also sit behind bot protection that blocks them by default.

This is a ten-minute fix with an outsized payoff, and it is the first thing Discovery checks.

Are you an entity, or just a string?

Search engines got comfortable with fuzzy string matching. Language models work with entities — resolvable things with attributes and relationships. "Sharma Textiles" is a string. An Organization with an address, a phone number, a founding date, a category and links to profiles that confirm all of it is an entity.

Organization schema on your site is how you assert that. Consistent name, address and phone across Google Business Profile, Justdial and your social profiles is how you corroborate it. Models weight corroboration heavily, because a single self-published claim is weak evidence.

Do you appear in the sources AI reads?

Models learn about businesses largely from places that are not your website — Reddit threads, Quora answers, review platforms, directory listings, news mentions, comparison posts. For Indian SMBs, Justdial, IndiaMART and Google reviews carry real weight.

If every mention of your business on the internet is on your own domain, you look unverified. Building those third-party mentions is the slow part of Reach, and it is also the part competitors cannot copy overnight.

Is your content shaped like an answer?

A model retrieving information does not read your page top to bottom. It pulls a passage. A passage that only makes sense after three paragraphs of setup is a passage that gets skipped.

Write sections that stand alone. Lead with the answer, then support it. This is the structural core of answer engine optimization.

Are you measuring the right thing?

Rank tracking tells you nothing here. The only real measurement is asking the engines the questions your buyers ask, repeatedly, and recording how often you are named and who is named instead.

Repeatedly matters. Ask once and you learn almost nothing — the same prompt frequently returns a different set of businesses on a second run.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. There is no ad placement inside ChatGPT recommendations today. Visibility comes from being crawlable, resolvable as an entity, and corroborated across third-party sources.

How long before AI assistants notice changes to my site?

Technical changes like crawler access and schema can be picked up within a few weeks, since the crawlers run continuously. Changes that depend on third-party mentions take longer, usually two to four months.

Does my business need to be big to get mentioned?

No, but it needs to be specific. Small businesses win AI mentions by being clearly the answer to a narrow question — a city, a niche, a price tier — rather than competing on broad national queries.
